Harley Quinn - Redesign Idea by SketchyMcDrawpants Harley Quinn - Redesign Idea by SketchyMcDrawpants
So much love was given for my drawing of that atrocious new DC relaunch costume that I decided to try my own hand at it. I went at this from the stand-point that for some reason it had to be done, because her classic costume needs no update. So this is what I would do if it absolutely had to be done. I wanted to keep elements of the classic costume, keep it practical and make it look like she can move in it. I went with the glasses to give her a smart, sexy doctor kind of look and combined it with a cool punk hairstyle that is sort of shaped like her old cowl. I kept the belt and pouches, cuz a girl needs a place to keep all her laughing gas and exploding cigars. It's meant to be functional and sexy without being blatantly slutty or sexist. I hope you like it - I just wish the DC folks cared about this character as much as we do.

Bad. Ass. Awesome redesign concept that still captures our beloved Harley with a bit of the old and new, especially the classic pop gun and expression :)

Also, loving the Dodson spin of not making her so lanky.

Now THERE'S a version that is actually in character! I wish they did this rather than the "official" re-design.. I loathe it -.- There's nothing wrong with being sexy, but there's a line between sexy and slutty *sigh*

Indeed, Optional Add-On's: some Segemented Bracers , Elbow pads and lower leg Greaves for protection. And a NFL upper body armour with a Smiley Face Backpack/Scabbard for addtional storage.

I like this, but there's just one thing I think that really trademarks her--
Her jester cowl!!!! 8D Words cannot describe. How much. I freakin' love that cowl.
I'm a bit iffy on the glasses because if she does like a superstunt they'd fall off but that's a RAD idea in replacement of the black mask.
I think this would be a great idea in temporary replacement but I'm still really bent on the original Harley (Perhaps because I'm afraid of change). But this is a good idea, nonetheless.
Cheers, yes!

now this is more like it! pratical, has elements of her classic costume and you made her look actually sexy, but not slutty.
my only complaint would be that i would prefer to see her with longer hair, but thats just me.
other then that, you did a pretty good job on it! definitely better then DC did!

I like this better than that gross redesign. I love her makeup, and the glasses... for some reason glasses just seems incredibly perfect. It's like the black mask plus some intelligent doctor attitude thrown in.... love it.

If DC came up with this, I'd be horrified again, actually.
I'd give you full critique of what I see wrong with your design concept (I know you anknowledge that it is only 'if necessary' and classic is the best), but I'm not sure if I should without, heh, permission, I guess.

Okay, I'll try to, uh, be as concise as possible. XD
Do excuse if I fail at it!

The actual issue with Harley's redesign for Suicide Squad was not the revealing clothing. Harley loves to show off skin, she's doing it in her casual clothes.
No, the biggest issue was actually the lack of anything resembling a harlequin, a jester. A clown. Just maybe the collar and cape.
Now your design lost it completely. There's nothing which say 'jester' but maybe the diamon pattern. It's a generic top and seemingly skinny trousers with her colours, but not actually having anything clownish about it. Cartoony hammer is a good point though, but it doesn't compromise for lack of anything more circus-y.

Combat boots. While they make sense, I'd say flats would work better for an acrobat still, or something less militaristic. It's not Harley's style. Plus, I used to walk miles in combat boots, and I hate how they feel. This isn't shoes for stunts.

Glasses. While they may look playful, thing is that Harleen Quinzel, former self, used to wear reading glasses to look more impressive. Personally I disagree with notion that after shedding off that personality, she'd consider wearing glasses again, especially doctor ones, maybe for a disguise or one-time mockery only.

Then, oh dear. The hair. It's my biggest problem with it.
Now I understand what you were trying to do, but if you wanted it to look like her cowl, why not actually put her in her cowl or something similiar? Harley is no punk. She's a rebel with an immature attitude, blond hair - only blond, I don't think she'd dye it in such a way, Arkham City is enough for a one-time shtick in an alternate universe, not actually going all the way with it. Now this is an overdone dye job.
And the style. Harley is supposed to be only in pigtails. Even DC got at least that right, it's who she is - a dangerous child with a schoolgirl hairstyle. You stripped her off it. It's either pigtails or a cowl, otherwise it's not really Harley Quinn either yet again.

I do like the "Ha-Ha" belt and the popgun still with her. And the earrings. But these are not enough to compromise for everything else which I commented on.
Thanks for taking time. :)

I can certainly see your point on a lot of these, but I disagree on a few points:

Showing skin isn't the issue, looking like a cheap prostitute is a problem, however. She's no stranger to sexiness, but she's never slutty - her tits would fall out of that stupid corset the second she started fighting.

Pigtails or the cowl would hit her in the face and temporarily blind her with her flippy combat moves, I think this would do a good bit less of that. Bright dye jobs are nothing crazy these days, so this isn't even overly punk. It's punk influenced, but it'd be pretty tame in most punk rock circles. It's playful and youthful, but unlike grown women with pigtails on the sides of their heads, a reverse bob doesn't make me think of shitty porn movies. My wife is a giggly, immature, girly school teacher (very Harley-like personality, without the evil crazy) and she LOVES this hair style, dye job and all.

I also think you've read too much into the glasses, but that's a personal interpretation thing so I can't really argue with it. I like how they make her look smart and doctorish - they rarely touch on how intelligent she is in the comics and I think that's a shame.

I also gave her distinctly harlequin make-up. White face, subtle but visible black downward triangles at the eyes, and red circles on the cheeks, not even mentioning the clown collar that's hinted at in her top.I can see how you could want more clown garb, but it's not fair say I didn't put any in at all, because it's definitely there - I even did research on traditional harlequin make-up.

The real truth is that there's no way to redesign her costume that would please fans because her current look is perfect for her,and it fits everyone's personal opinions of the character. You can't make it more clownish because it would look retarded (I even tried more diamonds and it looked terrible), and if you make it less clownish purists like yourself feel like it loses something. Bruce Timm is a damned genius and she's perfect just the way she is :)

thanks for taking such an interest, I love meeting other people with a passion for characters I love, even if we disagree on a few points.

Ehm, I'm sorry, but you are appearing very whorephobic. We're talking about the woman who has slept with professors for a PhD.

Well, I highly disagree with that. Cowl and pigtails never bothered her, why should they now? It's a distinctive part of her personality, I bet Joker likes it in her too, very childish and girly. I have nothing against the style itself, but it isn't what suits Harley.

Well, you did put some, yes, but it is not enough to do a character holding a jester nickname justice. Joker looks more of a clown.

Actually, I have seen some great fan re-designs which still stuck to jester theme without overdoing it. Practical and still harlequin. Look up Tira on SoulCalibur too. Clownish doesn't make something, like you put it, retarded.

I like that Harl's goofy, almost dorky, persona shines through here without making her seem like too much of a doofus [as she could sometimes get back in the old B:tAS days]. Especially love the two-tone boots, the HAHA belt buckle, and the crop top-- adds a nice balance. Also lovin' that you gave her full hips and strong arms-- makes her seem more realistic and like she can better hold her own. Not to mention swing that enormous mallet!

Much better than the DC redesign... I love her boots! Great drawing/coloring. The only thing I have to critique is her body shape - she's a bit too solid/muscular for my liking - it's probably quite accurate to the comic books, but in my mind Harley should always be light and petite for all that bouncing around/gymnastic tricks. But that's just a minor thing. Love her gun, mallet and expression!

Because Harley -is-?
Female gymnasts are not that buff, many of them -are- petite. Different gymnast types. Plus Harley was always known to be all small but curvy. It was Dodson who overdid the muscles.

As for design... art is great, but, I'm sorry, I don't like the idea. :(

The DC wiki lists her as "an Olympic level gymnast and acrobat". Show me a picture of one high level gymnast without incredibly muscular arms, and maybe I'll shut up about that one (even the tiny ones are rock solid) ;). These aren't even buff arms in my opinion. I don't see Dodson doing buff arms either, he just draws girls that aren't anorexic. I'll try to tone it down in the future because I've had several comments on more than one drawing about the arms looking buff, but these just look like average sized, slightly above average definition to me. Here's how I draw buff female arms: [link] if it was she-hulk I'd make them even bigger than that.
